Our
mission is dedicated to changing legislation by requiring the same
licensing standards for sober living homes that apply to any other
business. We do this to protect the safety of sober living residents,
as we want to be part of the solution.
We exist because some sober living home owners and operators are
getting away with murder by housing upwards of 22+ “residents” in a 3
bedroom / 2 bathroom residences.
In
Jarrod's case he was not even inside the "Safe House" as the owner had
utilized sheds in his backyards to increase his profits.
Since the inception of Proposition 36, thousands of sober living homes
have popped up our neighborhoods everywhere. Due to the current
conditions of overcrowding in our county jails and state prisons,
courts have been allowed to release convicted drug addicts to live
together in an attempt to get their addictions under control in an
prepare them to reenter society.
Currently
the local Building and Safety officials are the only regulatory
agencies that govern sober living homes. They cannot prohibit the
number of residents in a sober living home. Because of this these homes
are just as crowded as the county jails and in Jarrod’s case; he was
not even afforded the same amenities that he would have in a jail cell.
Some sober living home operators are turning into the modern day
slumlord profiting off people with an indiscriminate disease.
Sober
Living homes are not required to be licensed by the state or city so it
is essential that they follow the policies and procedures set forth by
the Sober Living Coalition. The policies and procedures set the minimal
standard of care for sober living homes are to help ensure that owners
and managers are taking all reasonable steps to help keep the residents
sober by providing a safe and sober living environment.
Once again, we need to be part of the solution!
